Speaking of patches, I've just found this

Which has amongst other things
linux-2.4.21-o1-sched+threading-backport.patch
So if you're like me and like things as packages and only follow lkml
vaguely due to life stuff you should be able to get the NPTL running on
2.4.20, I'm going to install phoebe-3 now and see if I can get the jdk
stuff working...
