Couple of ideas - you could try an external antenna on the card, rather
than the base station. You can get small omnis which attach to an
external socket (so you need to choose a card with a socket!)
Kim Hawtin also showed a homebrewed antenna once at GLLUG, made from a
compat disk, with a radiator of a small lenght of wire in the centre.
