Pinging the ppp peer is the sensible thing to do - it tests that the ADSL
line is up & running; if it isn't then an ADSL reset/reload needs to be done.
Pinging somewhere else involves testing the ISP's connectivity, if that is
screwed - there is nothing that my machine can do -- other than raise an alert
so that I can 'phone to complain.
It is this ADSL reset/reload that I want to achieve via a script.
