Well, internally the protocol used is IMAP.
SMTP is for sending mail between systems.

The emails are kept as individual files in a directory structure.
So all it has to do is put in the equivalent to symbolic links to
the original copy.

I dimly remember the mechanism used by iPlanet for single copy -
if I'm not wrong the 'copy' files had asingle line, which was the location
of the master copy.
