Of course learning sendmail first will mean that you will appreciate
exim/postfix/almost anything else alot more when you do dump sendmail. If
you are learning it to try and become a sysadmin type person then you will
need to learn sendmail, if your doing all this to get a nice home setup
going then it's probably worth avoiding it. Running exim/postfix will
allow you to virus scan and spam filter email, then sort them into the
correct inboxes, which is probably enough for a home network (it works for
me)
