According to someone who used to work for GEC-Osram, tungsten lamps fail
as you switch them off, and then just produce a flash as you switch them
back on. The filament becomes very brittle as it starts to cool, then
contracts rapidly, cracking the metal and effectively killing the lamp.
You can prolong the life of a tungsten lamp by dimming it slowly, but you
can't do the same with a hard drive.
