Employers, for right or wrong, are now saddled with all sorts of statutory
obligations towards employees - sick pay, maternity/paternity pay/leave -
and many ways of falling foul of employment law generally. Inevitably smaller
employers in particular will be wary of taking on staff that might prove to be
a burden due to unusual amounts of time off sick/in hospital etc; not
necessarily because of the direct costs but the indirect costs/hassle of
keeping the job covered during the absence.
If you have a 'flaky' sickness/health record and fail to disclose it when
asked to do so, and then later your absences from employmnent become a problem
for your employer, I would think the employer would have every right to
terminate the employment contract summarily.
Same thing with insurance; fail to mention something material and may bite you
when you come to make a claim !
