[Gllug] Linux For Beginners

More and more of my friends are finally coming round to the whole Linux
thing. I've been ranting at them about how Windows sucks for about a
decade now (makes me very popular at parties), and a few of them have
started to believe me.

This means I'm getting more and more requests to help people get
started. Originally I recommended Debian, since I like it, however I
think I hugely underestimated the difficulties the uninitiated would
have with it.

Well, what I really seem to have got wrong is that people won't read
manuals. This is immensely irritating but I can't think of a way of
forcing people to actually do it.

So, I'm looking for another distro to recommend. This is for proper
newbies - people who are intelligent but otherwise completely clue free,
and generally manualaphobic obviously.

I'm happy to babysit an install with them, but after that I don't want
to have to provide telephone support for the rest of their natural lives
:)

Thoughts?

Doug.
