For trying out distros, I can reccommend looking at cover CDs on linux magazines.

They generally cost about a fiver, and often have 'full' distro CDs.  Obviously,
you get more apps in the 7 CD set, but the intro CD is a good place to start.
Definately useful for the bandwidth-impaired.

And you get a nice magazine to read.

Sites like linuxemporium.co.uk cheaplinux.co.uk are also worth a look if you
want to avoid downloads.
