Don't go overboard.
Why not just go and see said admins, and ask them nicely?
You never know - they might turn a blind eye to a clueful person with a
Linux box.

Me, I wonder if it has something to do with their DHCP setup and maybe
registering MAC addresses? Maybe its just a lot of trouble, as you say,
to offer advice on how to configure lots of different types of laptop.
