Alas, not all cameras work using usb-storage. That's why software like
gphoto2 is necessary...

There is one more thing to look at though...
One /proc/bus/usb is properly mounted, assuming it wasn't, you can check
that directly for connected devices, and, there's a somewhat prettier
interface in X called usbview that'll show things in a slightly more
readable manner.
