It's more important how many hits per minute in peak. And how long those 
peaks are. 0.5 million is not a big number. About 10-11 hits a minute.
It depends on how many operations/hit is performed on db. 
How complex those queries are.
 
With GD i will worry more about CPU.

imo it should be very fast on 256 with need sometimes to use swap.
512 should fit perfectly.
