[Gllug] decreasing ping times

Every once in a while my adsl modem goes a bit funny.
If I ping it from within the home network, I get ping times that decrease by almost exactly 1 second each time, going from ~16 seconds down to 1, then repeat.
When it happens, it's quite a consistant cycle. A power down/up normally resolves it, but sometimes it just clears itself.
Any ideas why?
