Anyone have any idea why, on an old PC, the boot process should stop alternate
times on 'Loading compose keys:compose.latin.9.inc' ?

This seems to hang for ever, requiring a reset-button :(, CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't
work. It is very much, reliably & reproducibly, alternate boots. It doesn't
seem to matter if I turn off or not, or anything obvious - just alternate
resets. It basically only works if it's had to check the drives <aagh>!

The reason this is bugging me is that I've just rebuilt this machine, & it's
not been quite right, hence the need for reboots; previous uptime >1 year so
it's going to get forgotten if I don't get to the bottom of it now! It's on
ext3 partitions so it's surviving this treatment.

The next report is the 'Backspace sends..' message from keytable, followed by
postfix; Obviously I don't get these when it fails.

Boot.log, messages, syslog all contain logs of the successful boots - not a
trace of the others, I suspect I'm losing the file on reset?

This is Mandrake 9.1 (I know...) on a P166 (yes, I know...) which I use as a
minor server; when I get it fixed properly, I'll upgrade & who knows, that
may cure it yet :) but right now, I'm a tad puzzled! It shouldn't be memory
either, 128Mb on board.

Anyone seen it before?
