   Hope I have not confused the issue, the 8139 module is included in the
recent kernels, and does not need to be loaded. Unfortunately it is not
always possible to tell whether you will need the 8139too module instead, so
the system tends to assume that the old standard will work. With Debian, I
use

dmesg | more

to see what happened on booting, and if the card was not recognised either
install 8139too using modconf and/or add an extra line in /etc/modules. It
does not usually require additional parameters.
