You should check that the default IP address of the ADSL modem is not in
use anywhere else in the combined network, and if neccessary re-configure
that, but otherwise what you suggest is what would be a normal requirement
of any ethernet router, and you would not expect it to stop every time an
ADSL link failed. Just ignore the fact that it has an ADSL modem included in
the box, and set the boxes on your network to use the NTL box as the default
gateway.
If the NTL feed is wires only, and they do not require a specific box to
be connected to the end of their feed, you may even find that your box could
be re-configured as an alternative to the existing NTL termination.
