Did you do the usual Google search for "aol broadband NTL linux" or
similar?  I found this page which explains how to use basic PPPOE with
AOL broadband on Windows (so it ought to work on Linux too):

One solution might be to use a router which supports either wireless
or ethernet between the computer and the broadband connection.  If
this isn't possible, then it's very likely that some sort of AOL
voodoo is happening, in which case that sucks, but there's nothing she
can do about it.  Make it clear that the problem is with AOL not
supporting open standards.
