I think you're right about the licensing, no longer an issue of course.

I'm a KDE user but GNOME has got its fair share of funky features, 
instant apply being my favorite. In Konqueror the ioslaves esp. fish:// 
are awesome mind.

I guess it comes down to how much you're willing to configure your own 
desktop. Being OSS features of one shouldn't be too hard to move to the 
other :)
