As usual with debain that makes sense. I was only on about changing the 
meta packages however, which are debain specific. 

If anybody who doesn't use debian is interested an 'ar -x <package.deb>' 
will provide a control and data .tar.gz.

In the control file there's a postinst script that could be used to kick 
off the gnome or whatever package selection process. Although I'd 
imagine the debian folks would say "that's what apt/dpk/dselect/aptitude 
is for". Just a though :)
