   I have had perfectly good discs "fail" but show OK under the badblocks
test, one because it was running M$ and suffered the effects of a virus, but
more often because of power lead problems, especially when a short adapter -
extension was used to syphon off some power to drive a cooling fan. Very few
PSU's are supplied with enough outlets. All worked fine after the initial
problem was sorted.
