I would imagine that Dell's confirmation email is carefully word so that it
does not constitute an ACCEPTANCE of the order, only an acknowledgemnt -
the acceptance to follow only if 'stock is available' and fulfilled.

This way no contract has been formed under English Law  (which broadly requires
both an offer and an acceptance).

Web sites generally tend, I believe, to do this now as a matter of course,
special offer or not, to avoid the trap where someone screws up and places
items on the web site at the wrong price.

Perhaps someone would care to post the contents of the Dell confirmation email
on the list, out of interest?
