Different version of the SPARC chip. From memory:
v7 = sun4c (SparcStation 1, 2, IPC, IPX, etc)
v8 = sun4m (SparcStation 4, 5, 10, 20, etc) and sun4d (SparcCenter 2000 ?)
v9 = sun4u (all Ultra and Enterprise machines, 64 bit)
