I'm looking at tools for making disk images at the moment,
for cluster management.
rsync of course comes to mind :-)

I also found g4u
http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/

Using g4u involves booting from a NetBSD based floppy or CD.
It does a bitwise copy and compresses on the server. Should handle LVM,
YMMV

And there is Partition Image
