[Gllug] Sound fine under 2.4.26 but nothing under 2.6.8

Hi all,

I've just upgraded my (Sarge) workstation from kernel 2.4.26 to 2.6.8.
With the old kernel, sound just worked without me having to do anything.
With the new one it doesn't and I'm struggling to find any clues anywhere
about why not.

The sound controller is listed as:

0000:00:01.4 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
SiS PCI Audio Accelerator (rev 02)
Subsystem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS PCI Audio Accelerator
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
        I/O ports at d000 [size=256]
        Memory at cfffe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

and the Trident driver seems to load and detect it at boot,

Dec 4 08:46:42 blackbox kernel: Trident 4DWave/SiS 7018/ALi 5451,Tvia
CyberPro 5050 PCI Audio, version 0.14.10j-2.6, 10:07:39 Nov 23 2004
Dec 4 08:46:42 blackbox kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 0000:00:01.4
Dec 4 08:46:42 blackbox kernel: trident: SiS 7018 PCI Audio found at IO
0xd000, IRQ 11

but the volume control on Gnome stays firmly at 0. Any attempt to
increase it and it immediately goes back down again. AFAICS, no messages
are generated anywhere.

Any idea how to diagnose sound these days? It seems to have become a
completely black art.

John
