ISTR that "Baskets only" worked quite well.  A simple way to separate the 
weekly shoppers from the people who need milk and bread.  Of course then the 
supermarket employed some business anylist who told them they could "improve 
checkout throughput whilst maximising profit potential" by restricting people 
to EXACTLY 10 items at specific checkouts. All supported by a healthy dose of 
statistical ANALysis, to be sure.

Friday afternoon cynicism, can't beat it.
