I recently put Xfce on my box at home (had been a Morphix heavy-gui HD
install, then I added IceWM because Gnome ran slowly on the 400MHz
processor and I've now added Xfce because I couldn't get a pretty
background image on IceWM) and am finding it good to use.

I haven't got it looking quite as pretty as Gnome but it runs a lot
faster. Although I haven't used it long enough to say that I'm really
committed to it, it could be worth investigation. It's all about finding
the right tool for the job rather than the right spanner to bang the
screw in....
