[Gllug] Konqueror won't hold file associations

I have only ever known KDE in my relatively short time with Linux.
I cannot get documents added to the task-bar to work, because the document
is not associated with any application. So I can add a 'link' to a document,
but the shortcut does not function!
If I installed Gnome, how would I set it to be my default X application?
