Hi All,
I GOT SOUND WORKING ON THE LAPTOP!!!!!
Sorry, I had to share... I'll be quiet now :-)
It was quite simple in the end... I was simply loading the wrong module.
There's a Via AC97 card in the machine and so I told modconf to load the
AC97 module when I installed Debian. The module loaded successfully so I
didn't think any more of it.
Turns out I needed to load a module called VIA82C686 (or something like
that) instead. I was using modconf to remove the sound modules (in
preparation for compiling/installing ALSA, something I was not looking
forward to) when I noticed the VIA82C686 module and recognised the name from
the ALSA documentation. I figured it was worth a try first and hey presto I
have sound. Once permissions were sorted on the dev/dsp and dev/mixer
devices I had sound as users other than root too, luckily I had discovered
that little gotcha in the ALSA docs earlier.
David.
