I can see why the removal makes sense; however I have not come across 
any realistic replacements.  Freeamp still seems to be beta quality, 
none of the kde multimedia stuff has ever been usable.  What I do like 
about xmms is that it is small.  rhythmbox takes up a lot of screen area 
for no usable functionality, it is much slower to load and navigation is 
poor.

That is very exciting indeed, it maybe that totem becomes the default 
media player as I think that it has much that is needed, the ability to 
have a small descrete playlist and is reasonably fast to load.
