Squirrelmail uses it's own implementation of the IMAP protocol in PHP,
which may be a reason for high memory use. You could try IMP, which
relies on the PHP module having been compiled against the UW c-client
IMAP library. That implementation is in C, so may have a smaller
footprint. It's a pain to install though, as most distro shipped php
installations have not been compiled with the IMAP support.
