Would you pay more for a parallel protocol if it gives you the same performance
as a serial protocol?  I suspect not.  That's why people use them - pound for
pound, you get better performance at high speeds.

Call me a cynic, but I strongly suspect that the drive towards serial
protocols has more to do with cost than performance.....
