I just find it odd that people prefer to buy a product that costs a
lot of money, rather than using one which is free and is apparently
almost as capable. Possible reasons:
(1) People don't buy it - they make unauthorized copies of it.
(2) Perceived value of Photoshop is higher because it costs money.
People prefer the "real thing" to something which costs nothing.
(3) Niggling little differences between the two cause people who are
trained on PS to find GIMP unintuitive.
Or, I'm wrong and in fact GIMP is more widely used, but because it
doesn't show up in "sales figures" the business world doesn't take any
notice of it (rather like Linux really).
Rich.

'There is a joke about American engineers and French engineers. The
American team brings a prototype to the French team. The French team's
response is: "Well, it works fine in practice; but how will it hold up
in theory?"'
