That was detailed compaired to some of the bug reports I've had over the past.

It was enough for the group to point out the error of my ways though.

Sometimes its nice to know Yes or No, that what you are trying to do is 
actually sane. In this case, I was banging my head trying to build something, 
having just had a similar problem with a NASM upgrade where something was 
broken in the newer version. Thing about this list is that its a good sorce 
of "Dont bother, its broken" or "No, worked for me" as was the case here.

As it happened, a chap kindly pointed out that it actually worked for him and 
so I knew the problem lay outside the source code. I found a bug in the SuSE 
professional 8.2 package management software that hadn't uninstalled the 
previous version of gcc correctly ! fixed that and away we go.
