Held it down.

Then tried several varients on a theme, holding it down till the led came 
on, holding it down whilst it booted, holding it down all the throughout 
the whole boot and reprogram process.

I even tried holding it down whilst having the jumper in just in the 
master or slave positions.  (iIn which case the led didn't come in, so I 
guessed it wouldn't reprogram, and it didn't).

I now have sore fingers!
