Can't tell you why your firefox isn't working anymore but I can explain the
weird mozilla behaviour. The back-end of all mozilla-based browsers looks the
same. Mostly they are run from a wrapper-script that will check to see if
there is a browser already running, if there is it spawns a window off that
browser. This is a much more efficient thing to do than start a whole new
browser. However the script can't tell the difference between moz, phoenix,
firebird and firefox so if any of the above are running the wrapper script
will spawn a window from them. 

The above may be utterly incoherent. its been a long day.
