I remember I had some trouble with this when I used VMWare. Debian
eventually got a system for creating  this sort of thing on bootup but I
believe I got around it initially with a hand-modified init.d script to
mknod (or MAKEDEV) what I needed.

On another note you may want to ween devfs off your system. The
maintainer has disappeared and support is being dropped in 2.6 in favour
of udev, which is actually a better system IMO anyway.

I haven't installed it yet though.
