[Gllug] Getting VMware to cohabit with devfs

I have a licensed copy of VMware which I haven't been using for a
while.  I've just been trying to install it on my current workstation
(running Sarge, 2.4.25 and devfs).  It installs OK but I have a slight
problem.  VMware creates some devices under /dev which because (IIUC) of
devfs disappear when the system is rebooted.  How do I make them
non-volatile?  I've tried searching VMware's knowledge base but can find
no reference to devfs.
