It doesn't say what it was trying to do that resulted in the I/O error, 
which isn't helpful. My guess is that it was trying to open a socket to 
famd and failing because famd isn't running.

You should probably install it anyway - it will tell Courier when files 
on the filesystem change/are created etc. Should help Courier do Cool 
Stuff(tm) (of course, it'll also probably cause slight system slowdown, 
higher resource usage, etc, but hopefully not enough to notice). Courier 
may even emulate the stuff famd does using slower routines - in that 
case, installing famd might even make it go faster!
