I suspect that the overwriting problem that your
friend was referring to was the boot loader. If you
use lilo or another bootloader to manage your
dual-booting and then upgrade or re-install windows,
windows will cheerfully overwrite the boot partition
and you will need a floppy (or cd or whatever) to boot
back into Linux and re-install the boot manager that
you were using.
