For flatbed scanners you need a transparency adapter - basically its
a bright white light that fits into the lid of the scanner to iluminate
the slides/negatives. Without one of these your scans basically come
out opaque :-( Alternatively a dedicated film scanner is the more 
expensive option. With either option, you simply tell you sacnning
software that its a negative & it'll do the negation automatically.
Its typically hidden under a config option 'Media type' - with options
for photo, negatives & slide.
