FWLIW I've played a lot with Linux on 32-bit sparc, and while I've not
used gentoo I could see it being painful, looking at how long it takes
to generate RSA/DSA key pairs.

Of the rest, Debian worked ok, especially with the BBC, but my
experiments have led me to discover that for 32 bit sparc NetBSD is
absolutely the way to go, and is also satisfactory for SMP. which may
interest you as an SS20 owner
