However you may be running very old kernel or distro. How about
giving us a bit more specific details?

I, for one, am happily using a USB 1GB dongle/flash drive, with no
problems with SUSE 9.1, running kernel version 2.6.5

Of course USB support must be enabled on the BIOS.
