[Gllug] Asset Registers and tracking machines / software licenses

I've recently found myself in the position of picking up the
administration of software licensing[0] and tracking hardware assets for
a company that has a fair amount of both and some basic (and very
unwieldy) processes in place for keeping an eye on them.

What's everyone else using for this? Custom databases and scripts to
pull out (via SNMP, WMI and when all else fails local queries using SSH)
the relevant information for analysis and storage or do
OpenSource projects already exist to handle this? And if so which ones
are good?

[] Half the desk-tops are Linux (and one FreeBSD) so the workload
isn't so bad.
