[Gllug] help with ubuntu

Hi,

I have bitten the bullet and installed ubuntu on my machine. The basic config worked, now I just need to get the server bits working. I have started up iptables and that works fine and I have configured my second NIC. Now for dhcp and the screen.

Despite selecting it on the install screen I cannot get 1280x1024 or 1024x768 screen resolution. Anyone got any ideas why ?

I keep getting an error message when I try to start dhcpd (dhcp3-server). I have tried using my old redhat dhcp config but that does not really help, anyone point me to a howto or similar on this. I have looked at the dhcpd howto but that is what I used with red hat and ubuntu does not like that config.

Thanks for your help

Simon

The only reason I am not too keen on this is because I am bound to forget some package or another. I suppose the best thing is I will be keeping my old install in tact on the old disk for a while. I could still do this with ubuntu and then at least I have the main workstation functionality.

Hi Simon

The way me and a flat m8 did this for 2 servers which has worked out very well, was to install a very basic install of debian and then build it up from there.

I know that your not to keen on hunting for packages, but with debian you can use apt which will save you all the searching pretty much. Doing it this way gives you a nice custom setup to suite your needs.

OK,

I have my new 80GB disk and want to download an install this weekend. Just so you know, I plan to use this machine primarily as a firewall and mail server. It has 2 linksys nics one to the Internet and one to my LAN. I want a distro that includes x and I can use as an occasional workstation (which means ubuntu would work for this) but I do want to run things like JBoss and Apache as well as a mail server.

I would prefer not to have to go hunting for packages so if anyone has any ideas if there is a better distro than ubuntu for this then please let me know. I am concerned that ubuntu is really a desktop distro rather than a server/desktop hybrid.

Thanks

Simon

I think both are right :-)

I would back it up anyway, even though it IS on a separate file system. I might not follow the same model for the new install though as I have been looking at disk prices and as I can get 80GB for under £40 I might buy a new one to build on. That way I don't compromise my existing build and when complete I can use my current 40GB disk to play at installing Linux on my Playstation :-)

Why on earth _wouldn't_ he want to do that?
