12M of RAM is pretty low.

However, you might consult the 4MB Laptop Howto - written by our very
own Bruce Richardson. There - he's beeling now.

I doubt you'll get any useable X performance on 12M though.
I find on my 64M laptop that Gnome is painfully slow.
I use a lightweight window manager called IceWM - there have been
discussions on GLLUG on low-memory laptops in the past.
