It's not just the typesetting that makes the Tufte books stand apart
from others.  It's the superb way he lays out diagrams next to the
text (you *never* need to turn a page to look at a diagram which he is
discussing), the quality of the diagrams themselves, combined with his
excellent writing style.  Knuth is of course also great - I have two
of his books right here next to the Tufte books.
