Silly question, but is it possible to increase the RAM?  At 64 Mb, you'll find 
that things will zip along (certainly compared to 12 Megs!).

One of the lightweight desktops (IceWM would be my choice) would be essential 
- you can forget kde and gnome as they're too bloated.  Most distros have 
IceWM as an option, and (for my money) Mandrake is the easiest to install for 
a beginner.
