Thanks to Jack Richards, Richard Jones,Amias Channer and Tethys for
their responses to my above question.

I didn't make myself quite clear - for this I apologise.  I don't want to
touch the partitions in any way, just get rid of the date. The new distro
will format the partions with the filesystems I want to try (I'll have a go
at ext3 and reiser). I now understand how to proceed.

Just one point, however. Tethys, is 'unusable' a typo for 'usable' ( in
the sense of 'available'.
