A good range of optics is available, including 55:1 zooms with very
complex mechanical drives and many individual pieces of glass, which do get
plenty of use, so often show some wear and tear, (they may only cost around
50,000). The depth of focus can be around an inch when zoomed right in, and
it is very difficult to get the shots required when you are unable to also
view the scene using a standard eyeball, while the mechanical complexity of
the camera optics give all sorts of problems, from servo power and speed, to
precise accurate control without overshooting or oscillating. The lens may
weigh over 25 Kg.
