[Gllug] Routing question

Good afternoon

We have a situation where a VPN links 3 sites that all use the same
subnet. Granted, this is stupid and makes things unnecessarily difficult
(and I'm trying to get it changed), but I was just curious:

A local host 192.168.0.20 connects to the VPN, just the interface, no
routes:

ifconfig gives:
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:A0:C9:FC:09:8B
          inet addr:192.168.0.20  Bcast:192.168.0.255
Mask:255.255.255.0

ppp0      Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:192.168.0.13  P-t-P:192.168.0.20
Mask:255.255.255.255

route gives:
192.168.0.0   *          255.255.255.0   U     0      0        0 eth0
default    192.168.0.254 0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth0

And now I can ping 192.168.0.13 from another local host - and don't
understand why / is there any way to avoid that? I suppose I imagined
the interfaces kept themselves separate.
